Course Description

Art 6 is a semester long course that meets every other day. The course is designed to give students an introduction to art at the middle level. The primary objective of the course is explore how artists use identity in every piece they create, while building on skills related to the elements and principles of design.  

Power Standards

  1. Student is able to plan, refine and produce visual artworks using appropriate materials, processes and techniques.
  2. Student is able to reflect on, respond to, and evaluate visual art.
  3. Student understands how art connects to themselves and the world by creating and relating works that express personal ideas and feelings.

Course Outline

Plan, refine and produce visual artworks using a variety of materials, processes and techniques.

Guiding Questions Learning Objectives 
  • What are the steps of the creative process
  • How do artists overcome challenges?
  • What techniques can be used to maintain a proper level of craftsmanship in a work of art?
  • What techniques can be used to bring an idea to life in a realistic/readable way?

Students can….

  • Use thumbnail sketches to plan and refine project ideas.
  • Use mediums to create shading, texture, depth and contrast
  • Use techniques in a variety of mediums to maintain a proper level of craftsmanship.
  • Problem solve when issues arise in artworks
Summative Projects: Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, and Ceramics

Reflect on, respond to and evaluate components of visual art.

  • How can artists reflect on their artistic process to notice strengths and weaknesses?
  • How can artists articulate learning using artistic language and vocabulary?

  • Demonstrate knowledge of artistic vocabulary in written and verbal forms.
  • Identify elements and principles of design in a variety of different artworks.
  • Reflect on artistic process by articulating strengths and weakness in own art.
