Course Description

Art 8 is a year long course that meets every other day. The course is designed to build off skills learned in 6th and 7th grade Art, while giving providing students with real life applications of the craft. The primary objective of the course is to offer choice-based projects that offer students the opportunity to learn about careers in art and how to apply skills of problem-solving, innovation and perseverance to any career path.

Power Standards

  1. Student is able to plan, refine and produce visual artworks using appropriate materials, processes and techniques.
  2. Student is able to reflect on, respond to, and evaluate visual art.
  3. Student understands how art connects to themselves and the world by creating and relating works that express personal ideas and feelings.

Course Outline

Plan, refine and produce visual artworks using a variety of materials, processes and techniques

Guiding Questions Learning Objectives 
  • What kind of schooling is required to have a job in the arts?
  • What sort of processes do real life artists use when planning and executing their projects?
  • What aspects of the real world do artists have to consider when creating projects?
  • How do artists maintain craftsmanship when working with a variety of mediums?
  • What sort of issues to real life artists have to problem solve through?
  • Understand the path to take to obtain a career in the arts.
  • Plan complex projects using a variety of different avenues to come to a conclusion.
  • Understand the client/artist relationship many artists must consider when visualizing artworks.
  • Demonstrate proper artistic techniques to maintain a high level of craftsmanship when using a variety of different materials.
  • Problem solve through issues with little to no help from the teacher.
  • Think outside the parameters of the project to consider factors that might enhance their final works.
Summative Projects Explore: Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Metal, Sculpture, Ceramics and Mixed Media

Reflect on, respond to and evaluate components of visual art

  • How do artists communicate with clients when given a task?
  • How can artists use feedback/reflection to better their work?
  • How do artist express their personal connection to work through writing.
  • How do artists use artistic language when describing and discussing art?
  • Utilize client requests while still maintain artistic voice in their artworks.
  • Interpret feedback from their peers to help better their artistic process.
  • Write artist’s statements that express and reflect upon their artistic thinking and process.
  • Utilize artistic vocabulary in conversation and written form when discussing a variety of artworks.
Activities Include: Mid-Project Critiques, End-Project Critiques, Concepts Reflections, Personal Reflection, Visual Close Reading and Artist Statements.

  • How can artistic skills be used in any career path?
  • How does art ebb and flow with the changing climate of the world around it?

  • Notice patterns in their artwork to understand how they use art to respond to the world around them.
