Update on Inclement Weather Days, Make-up Minutes

We have had a sequence of inclement winter weather days over the past few weeks. As a result, many people are wondering how these missed days will be addressed. We would like to share some basic information to provide as much clarity as possible, given the fact that we are still early in the overall winter weather season in Wisconsin.

The Wisconsin State Statutes require a minimum number of minutes (not days) for students to be in session each school year and this varies by level. Thus, the actual minutes that need to be ‘made up’ vary from level to level. Each year, the district builds extra minutes into the calendar to cover a certain amount of missed time for inclement weather.

Recently, the Governor declared a state of emergency due to our severe weather. However, per a message from the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) earlier this week, the statutory requirement for minutes will not be changed despite the state of emergency. Therefore, we will be mapping out a plan by level to address any minutes that need to be made up. 

At this point in time, only our high schools and Valley New School need to make up minutes of instruction. These situations could be addressed by adding minutes to the instructional day rather than adding day(s) to the school year. However, this could change based upon possible future cancellations. We will keep you informed as the winter season continues to unfold.
